Quick Tips: How to Identify Antique Oil Paintings

With antique oil paintings, the composition, condition, and artist can all have a great impact on the value. We love identifying pieces brought to us by our Orlando clients, especially when it is a particularly old or rare artistic work. We also understand that people are naturally curious; whether the piece was found by an amateur at a local estate liquidation, or it is part of a collection, the owner will want to find out as much information about the piece as possible.

While you should always minimize contact with historical oils, and leave any in-depth or invasive inspections and restorations to a professional Orlando conservator, it’s nice to know how to properly handle and inspect your piece. So this is a quick overview of how to go about identifying different aspects of antique oil paintings.

Safety First

When handling any delicate antique oil painting, it’s important to prevent acidic skin oils transferring to the piece. Nitrile gloves work well for this. Although they wear out sooner than cotton gloves, they tend to allow for a better grip. If you need to take down any artwork, retain a firm grip with one hand at the base of the frame, and the other on one side. Be sure to prepare a padded, yet stable, surface to set it on before you begin. If you’re unsure about your ability to safely handle the piece, please call an Orlando professional.

Color and Content

When a piece is not one that was created by a famous artist, both the content and color greatly influence its desirability. Quite often landscapes, with bright, contrasting colors will command a higher price. Likewise, beauty will sell far easier than anything that is mundane, has muted colors, or depicts unappealing or controversial topics.

Larger does not always command a higher price. For most homes, medium to small pieces fit far better than any of the much larger works. This is why, in Orlando and other major cities, antique oil paintings such as full length portraits or sprawling landscapes are mostly found only in museums or public buildings.

It’s important to realize that the condition can vary drastically based on two things. How the antique oil painting has been cared for since its completion, and the artist’s construction of the work. Either of these can easily negate the other. If constructed poorly, no amount of care can prevent it from degrading, while even the most delicately prepared piece will wear heavily when badly cared for.

Cracks and loss of paint are usually obvious when closely inspected, but often an exam under normal light isn’t enough. Here’s an easy trick: Find a strong light source, such as a lamp or bright window, and hold the canvas up to it. It needs to be bright and close enough to allow light to be seen through the cracks, while remaining far enough away that you don’t risk bumping the painting against the window or light source. Remember that cracking due to age is unavoidable; cracks should be visible, but flakes should be secure, not falling away easily.

Varnish is usually used to protect antique oil paintings, but as it ages it becomes brittle, loses the ability to protect, and the clear coat turns an ugly yellow. This obscures and dulls the colors of the work, making it appear muted and shallow. Fortunately, this malady is only temporary, as a conservator in the Orlando area would be able to remove the old varnish and apply a fresh, clear coat, restoring any lost vibrancy.

Of the two types of supports that are commonly used (fabric and wood), both have the potential to damage the work if not properly cared for. Wood should be closely examined for cracks and wormholes, as well as any markings that might indicate the artist while you’re at it. If the back panel is improperly sealed, there are two types of damage that can occur. In areas of high humidity like Orlando, moisture is absorbed into the wood causing it to expand. This warps the wood, pushing the paint together and causing it to lift away from the page in the form of small ripples. The reverse happens in dry environments, where the shrinking wood pulls the oil apart, creating cracks.

Even with these small tips, without a familiarity of the current market or experience, it’s impossible to properly value a piece. If you are hoping to sell an antique oil painting, one of our Orlando representatives would be happy to provide you with a free market analysis. Sarasota Antique Buyers : Estate Liquidators in St. Petersburg

If you have a plethora of items that you have inherited or accumulated in St. Petersburg and are looking to sell, trust the experienced estate liquidators at Sarasota Antique Buyers to help you get the money you deserve. Sarasota Antique Buyers has over 22 years of experience buying and selling antiques so you can be confident in their knowledge of the trade.

estate liquidators in St. Petersburg

How It Works:

Estate liquidators are different from estate sales. Anyone with things to sell can hold an estate sale, but with estate liquidations, a professional will make sure that the pricing is fair for each piece and can also examine items at the same time. Let us take a look at what you have in your St. Petersburg property and see if you too, are the owner of unknown treasure. The result might surprise you.

When you trust us with your things, we offer two ways of handling your sale. We can offer a quick settlement where we offer you a cash amount and sell them on our own at a later time. If you do not need the money right away, we will place your belongings in an auction held on our property. Using the estate auction service can often lead to higher gains since it allows people to compete for each item. We arrange our services on a commission basis.

The relationships we maintain with an extensive network of worldwide auction houses are just a proof that we hold valuable expertise. There is no guess work involved in pricing your items; our knowledge of the value of antiques is one that most other services in the area cannot offer. Our estate liquidators can find your diamonds in the rough.

What We Are Looking For:

If you are not sure what your items are worth, set up a consultation with one of our professional estate liquidators at your St. Petersburg property and let us help you through the process of liquidation. We are knowledgeable about all kinds of antiques in many different genres including statues, bronze, silver, and Asian jewelry. Here are some other things that we love to purchase that you may not have thought of as eligible:

Modern Furniture:

Dining tables, side tables, chairs, chests, sofas and other items that were produced from the late 19th century to present day and were influenced by modernism are hot commodities in the antique world. These pieces are often made of teak, mahogany, bronze, or metal.

Don’t assume any heirloom of jewelry is of no important value or costume unless you have it analyse by a professional estate liquidator. Different eras have specific styles that they found appealing and although we might not find those pieces pretty now, they could still be worth something. Weight, carat and condition are all factors in determining the worth of an item.

Modern Art:

You would not be the first to find out that a random piece of art that has been living in your property is worth more than you think. Before you think about putting anything in a garage sale, let one of our collectors evaluate the piece. Modern art includes cubist, impressionist and minimalist art. Just because you cannot see a signature does not mean art cannot be identified.

Sarasota Antique Buyers:

Whether you acquired your items from inheritance or you are downsizing your home, we can help you successfully and discreetly get a fair price for them. Our reputation as the best estate liquidators in St. Petersburg gives us the confidence that we will get you the best possible service. You can either easily fill out and submit a contact request form on the right side of this page, or feel free to call us today at 941-373-1234. Additionally, if your collection is too large, or the item is too unwieldy, we are more than happy to schedule an appointment where we can meet with you in your home.

Antique Furniture, Modern Furniture and Sculptures

Is Your Oriental Antique Furniture Authentic?

Oriental antique furniture has an ornate beauty and history that can become the centerpiece of a room in your Orlando home or complement an existing theme perfectly. There are a variety of styles, and each has distinctive features. If you are in the market for Oriental furniture, you should never purchase a piece if you are unsure of its authenticity or value.

To help you take a deeper look into the piece that is interesting to you, we would like to bring your attention upon two major design aspects usually found in authentic Oriental antique furniture.

Symmetry- Take a look at the symmetry of the pieces you examine and be wary of ones that look too perfect. Keep in mind that pieces that were handcrafted may have an uneven joinery. Symmetric, precise cuts are usually a sign that some sort of machinery was used during the creation process. A nick or cut in the wood is actually a sign of handmade authenticity. Remember, a rare antique will not be perfect because it was not produced by modern machines, examine a piece with the help of a professional and be attentive to detail.

Finish – It is important to identify the finish on a piece because this is a key factor in determining the date it was made. Until the mid-1800s, shellac was the only clear finish that had been developed in addition to oil or wax. For this reason, you need to be wary if a piece looks like it may be finished with varnish or lacquer; as this is a common sign of manufactured item. If you cannot test a finish, inspect with the help of a professional who would know the difference by sight.

Antique furniture appraisal

If you have acquired a piece of Oriental antique furniture that you would like appraised by a professional or if we can answer any further questions you may have on a piece you are interested in, call us today in Orlando at 941-373-1234. Antique Silver, antique sterling silver, Chinese Silver

Quick Facts About Chinese Antique Silver

Many Orlando homes feature Chinese antique silver pieces for the right reasons. These can indeed be a quaint and ornate addition to any atmosphere. As you can imagine this genre has a rich history, which could help you identify genuine items when you see them.

Westerners started traveling to China as tourists for the first time in the 18th century. During their trip, they quickly became fascinated with the dramatically different images and themes that the pieces had in comparison to the Western themes they were used to.

Since the travel time to China from other countries was so long, tourists would usually stay for extended periods of time and would often request that custom pieces be made for them. Throughout the next two centuries ships took an extensive amount of Chinese antique silver back to western countries. In the 19th century, various authors documented these artifacts in books, and soon, people started collecting. Today, there is a plethora of Chinese silver on the market to collect and a genuine piece you may find in Orlando is worth its weight.

Singularity and Markings

Tourists originally became interested because of the uniqueness of design. Themes depicted in western cultures simply paled in comparison to fierce Chinese dragons and ornate characters.

The beautiful thing about the markings on these artifacts is their imperfections. Genuine pieces were always made by hand and individually so no two would look the same and would never be cut too precise.

If you look closely, any genuine Chinese antique silver will have an adornment marking of the maker’s choice.

Looking at Chinese Antique Silver Pieces

Silversmiths made such items as bowls, dishes, goblets and covered cups all in exquisite detail. When looking at a piece from this time, it is important to note that western purity of this metal was higher than that of Chinese at the time of most popular production. Despite the difference in purity standards, the value of such antique is not affected.

If you want to learn more about buying and selling Chinese antique silver, contact our Sarasota Antique Buyers representative in Orlando, and find out where our next sale is, or to set up an appraisal appointment. Call today at 941 373 1234.
